Lanier Athletes Fare Well at Lake Placid

Members of the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club came home with medals from the national team trials in Lake Placid, N.Y. June 24.
The USA Canoe Kayak Sprint National Team trials on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid, N.Y. brought some great results. USACK is the national governing body for the Olympic Sports of Flatwater and Slalom Canoe Kayak Racing.
Kalen Lee qualified for both the Junior and Senior World Championships teams, while Morgan House qualified for the Junior World Championships team. Lanier Junior Woman Kalen Lee dominated the competition with a first place win in the Junior Women 500M K1, first place in the Senior Women 500 K4 with Olympian Carrie Johnson, Maggie Hogan and Suzannah Stucchio, and third place in the Senior Women 500M K1. Kalen qualifed for both the U.S. Junior World Championships and U.S. Senior World Championships teams with her performance. Kalen is the first Lanier Junior athlete to achieve this goal. Lanier teammate, Emily Mickle had a very strong performance, finishing third in the Junior Women 500M K1 and third in the Senior Women 500M K4. Other Lanier athletes qualifying for the Junior A final included Victoria Llonch in seventh place, Emily Vinson in eighth place and Mary Taylor in ninth place. USACK will select a total of seven women to compete in Szeged, Hungary for the Junior Worlds and a similar number to compete in Zagreb, Croatia at the Senior World Championships over the course of the weekend.
Meg Sutton placed first in the Junior Women B Final, Candace Bennison was second and Jessica Carrillo placed fourth. In the Senior Women K1, Katie Hagler placed eighth in the A final and Anne Blanchard finished first in the B Final. Katie also finished third in the Senior Women K4 with teammate Emily Mickle. Mary Taylor and Meg Sutton finished first in the Juvenile Women 500M K2, Jessica Carrillo and Candace Bennison finished second and Anna Crawford and Morgan Smith finished fourth. Mary Taylor was first, Meg Sutton second, Candace Bennison third, and Jessica Carrillo fourth in the Juvenile Women K1 500M. Anna Crawford was first and Morgan Smith second in the Bantam women K1 final.
Morgan House ruled over the Junior Men K1 with a gold medal in the Junior Mens K1 500M which qualified Morgan for the USACK Junior World Championships team. House teamed with Josh Brandsma to take the silver medal in the Junior Men K2 500M, and fourth in the Senior Men K2. Ty Hagler had the top Lanier finish in the Senior Men K1 500 with a fifth place finish, Tim Hornsby fininshed seventh and John DePalma finished ninth in the Senior Men 500M K1 A Final. Josh Brandsma finished sixth, David Cohen finished seventh and Brady Bragg ninth in the K1 Junior A Final. Brandon Honea finished fifth, Mason Dula sixth and Sheaffer Sorrells finished ninth in the K1 Men Junior B Final. Lanier Juvenile athletes Bradon Honea took the Gold, Sheaffer Sorrells took the Bronze, Mason Dula won fifth and Steven Leech won the sixth place in the K1 500M Juvenile event.
Lanier also did well in the canoe events. Richard Stewart placed third in the 500M Junior Canoe, and Senior David Aldrich placed second in the 500M Senior C1.
