LCKC Coach Claudiu Ciur Given
Sprint Coaches Association
2009 Coach of the Year Award

Appointed earlier this year to replace previous Head Coach Dave Robertson (2008 SCA Coach of the Year), Claudiu took on this task and let his internationally honed sprint instincts be his guide. He had to find time to run his contracting company, plan his upcoming wedding on two continents, oversee the High Performance LCKC athletes, coach at the Lake Placid National Junior World Camp, coach Canoe athletes at the Senior Worlds in Dartmouth Nova Scotia and lead LCKC in its defense of their National Club Championship.

Apparently he felt there was still more to give, so he joined the USA Canoe Kayak Marathon Team at the Worlds in Spain as a coach.
Claudiu has also demonstrated his passion for the sprint “canoe discipline” and has led a crusade to inspire athletes at both the Junior and Senior levels men and women.

Congratulations Claudiu for helping to raise the performance level of USA Canoe and Kayak at the club, national and international levels. For most it takes a lifetime, you did it in your first year!

The third annual festival will be held on Saturday, September 26th at the Peachtree City’s Drake Field. It will be a fun-filled day of Dragon boat racing as well as an international festival of food and entertainment.

We will also be celebrating the City's 50th Anniversary!!

Dragon boat racing is the world's fastest growing water sport. It combines tradition with modern day teamwork, enthusiasm, and strategy. Looking for leadership and team building activities that focus on unique athletics and diversity? Dragon boating is a great way for corporations, organizations, and youth groups to get involved in a dynamic setting.

Teams consist of 25 persons: 20 paddlers, one drummer one steer person and three alternates. Last year over 2,500 attended to watch 27 boats compete. The Rotary Club of Peachtree City expects this year’s event to be much larger.

Team sponsorships are for organizations who want to have their own team in the race or who want to support a team for another organization such as a church or youth group. Some larger organizations may want to have more than one team competing against each other. The Rotary Club team will work with any organization to help organize and train the team.

International Festival

The International Festival will be held in conjunction with the races.
The objective of the Rotary Festival is to raise awareness of our cultural diversity and increase interest in international commerce through the interaction of the community, business and the arts. What a better way to learn about other cultures than to enjoy the food and fun!

What better way to learn about other cultures than to enjoy the food and fun? There will be food vendors in colorfully decorated tents. The flavor of the wonderful food will be complemented by spotlights of entertainment. There will be something for everybody!

You can dine on Caribbean Jerk Chicken, Hot Dogs, Polish Sausages, BBQ or Chinese or Italian cuisine. You can share the joy of dragon boat racing. Imagine 22 people in unison on one boat gliding across the lake. Be entertained by Irish, Folk and Greek dancers as well as Adoptive Chinese American children singing. There will be vintage mustangs on display, origami demonstrations, as well as a children’s bounce structure. Come be part of the joy and entertainment of this special day of fun and festivity

The 2009 USA Canoe Kayak Sprint National Championships is complete. Athletes from all over the US met to compete in the events which were held on the site of the 1996 Centennial Olympic paddling & rowing events.

This year's Nationals came to LCKC out of necessity, and with so little advance time to prepare for such an event, we were concerned about our ability to properly host this penultimate meeting of the best paddlers in the USA. We wanted to give all concerned the experience here that years worth of hard work deserved. We hope we met your expectations. Rest assured, if and when we ever get the honor of hosting another Nationals, we will be ready! Thanks go out to all the volunteers from LCKC and other teams who made this event possible.

Additional thanks to the City of Gainesville for their outstanding support in preparing the venue for our guests, our sponsors who stepped up with no hesitation in a down economy to help us, and finally, to all of you. It's great to know that the sport we love has so many wonderful people associated with it.

The event was broadcast live via The LCKC Channel. Over 65,000 viewers watched the event. The response to this series of broadcasts continues to amaze us. We've heard back from our extended club family on vacation, friends in Germany, our former coaches from Canada logged in to say 'Hi!' and 'GO LCKC!!!' (hi Dave & Devri!), and our training partners in Romania - Bună ziua Orsova!

Our main goal in offering these broadcasts was to extend the ability for the whole paddling community to join in the celebration which are the Nationals. This was for the folks back home, and all around the world as over 48 different countries viewed the broadcast. We will continue to offer live webcasting and On Demand access to our events here at the venue as our schedule allows. Don't be surprised if you see us trying new ways of presenting the sport - including in-boat video feeds during races!

All of the official results are available at Powerhouse Timing.

Stories like these are one of the reasons local sports broadcasters are SO IMPORTANT to local sports teams and clubs, like LCKC. They help spread the message of amateur athletics to a large audience that we would otherwise not reach.

We wish to thank WXIA (11alive.com), Randy Waters, and the news directors and management there for their time and efforts to spotlight local sports programs.

Thank you to Master of the LCKC Fleet Pete Smith for facilitating this story.

"It wasn't THAT cold!"

The 12th Annual Polar Bear Swim is another LCKC success story. Actually 83 jumpers registered today to jump in chilly Lake Lanier. Many thanks to all our LCKC volunteers and our 2009 Polar Bear Sponsors for making this event a success. Thank you to Hot Springs Spas of Atlanta who provided hot tubs which were welcomed by the jumpers.

Some of the LCKC Athletes in attendance showed the U.S. Marine Corp what they are made of today. The Marines brought their recruitment vehicle and pull-up bar and much to their surprise they quickly ran out of t-shirts which they gave away to anyone who could do 20 chin-ups.

The following story is found on www.accessnorthga.com You can also go to www.myfoxatlanta.com see a feature story on todays event.

12th Annual Polar Bear Swim brings in 2009 at Lake Lanier

BY JERRY GUNN STAFF

Sixteen year old Luke Potts from Flowery Branch High School said it took him only two seconds to get up the hill to a waiting hot tub after his Polar Bear plunge

GAINESVILLE - It was another chilly Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club Polar Bear Swim to mark the New Year Thursday at the Olympic Venue on Lake Lanier.

Bruce Northrop and his 10-year-old daughter Sarah were the first divers in the 12th annual event; the water temperature was 48 degrees under a clear sky.

"It was great! Happy New Year," Northrop said as he warmed up in a hot tub after his frigid plunge. " I feel like a new man."

So why did 73 swimmers jump into cold Lake Lanier on January 1st; Northrop had a ready answer.

"Because its there, like Mallory said about Mount Everest," he explained.

"We're going to have over 70 people nice and blue running up to the hot tubs," Jim O'Dell with LCKC said.

Sixteen year old Luke Potts from Flowery Branch High School said it took him only two seconds to get up the hill to a waiting hot tub after his Polar Bear plunge.

O'Dell added the Polar Bear Swim remains the club's most popular event.

"It has been over the years," O'Dell said. "All of the canoe and kayak races we have throughout the year pale in comparison to the Polar Bear Swim."

Elizabeth Canupp dressed up as a Christmas tree and won the best costume category; awards were also given out for best jump, and the oldest and youngest swimmer.

The 12th Annual Polar Bear Swim is Today, Jan 1, 2009 at 2pm!!! The hot tubs are ready and waiting for the jumpers. All volunteers need to be at the venue by 1:00pm. We will need a few hands earlier in the morning to put the finishing touches on the venue so if you can help please come on out earlier. The venue will open at 10:30am.
