What is the Beginner Racing League?
The Beginner Racing League (BRL) introduces youth, age 9-14, to the exciting sport of flat water canoeing and kayaking. Whether your child is still looking for “the right” sport, a seasonal activity, or something in addition to other commitments, teams practice twice each week for 6 weeks, then race against each other at the Fungatta on the 1996 Olympic race course.
Athletes learn basic paddling skills and race on calm, flat water in single, double, quad, and dragon boats. While the sport can be highly competitive, the focus at the BRL level is really competing with yourself. Athletes beam with pride as they progress to “tippier,” but faster, boats or shave a second off their personal best time.
Held every Spring and Fall, the program is organized into several teams, and you can pick a team with a schedule that works for you.
LCKC provides the boats, paddles, and life jackets, along with a team t-shirt for the Fungatta. Just bring a change of clothes, a towel, running shoes, and a water bottle to practice.
